New is Always Better

Well, I’ve finally done it. I’ve redesigned my website. I suppose it may not look like much has changed, as I opted for the minimal, readable approach.

I started the process seriously in December and went through a good four or five designs since then before coming up with the current one. None of the previous designs were particularly bad, but they all had issues of readability and they all got stale rather quickly. I’ve had this design in place for a few weeks now and I still enjoy looking at it. It’s simple, readable, and modern. I like it. Admittedly, the projects page is kind of bland. Hopefully I will muster up the energy to improve that soon.

What’s new?

A new, trendy domain name!

A clean, fully responsive, original design using semantic HTML5 and CSS3

Use of Close Pixelate to supply the pixelation effect on the home page

Switch from Wordpress to the awesome, anti-CMS Jekyll because I’m as hip and cool as the rest of you hackers

Related to the switch to Jekyll, I can now compose all of my posts in Markdown

Removed the ability to add comments (why moderate dozens of spam comments each day for 1 or 2 real comments per month? Twitter is a much better feedback channel)

Use LESS for the first time (and I absolutely love it)

Added an about page

The entire site is in a repo on GitHub and hosted on GitHub Pages (for now)

The to-do list

Make the projects page something worth visiting

I want the home page story squares to slide left and right when changing pages

A 404 page (using the default GitHub one right now)

Convert site JavaScript to CoffeeScript and figure out a way to automate compilation when deploying the static site

I have aspirations of writing my own, responsive-friendly, image-less Lightbox script. For now, the standard Lightbox will do.

That about sums it up. I’m glad to finally have this puppy out the door, I have other things I want to start building! Please post any bug reports on the GitHub issues page.
Liquid error: No such file or directory - /tmp/pages/rmxdave/rmxdave.github.com/_includes

Introducing phnx photos

Exciting news today to top off a great Thanksgiving weekend. All existing installations of phnx now are able to upload to the brand new http://photos.phnxapp.com website! No more relying on TwitPic’s unstable API and cluttered interface! Plus, your images get shared with cool phnx.ws URLs to boot.

In addition, phnx 1.1.6 was submitted to Palm with FAST photo uploads and the ability to preview images posted with the phnx photos service!

If you’d like to give the phnx photos service a try, go ahead and just upload an image as normal, no update required. All users of phnx have automatic access to the new photo site!

If you’d like to use phnx 1.1.6 before Palm approves it, go ahead and download the source code on GitHub.

I’m looking forward to building a great image service, feel free to send any suggestions over here!
Liquid error: No such file or directory - /tmp/pages/rmxdave/rmxdave.github.com/_includes

phnx 1.1.2 changelog

phnx has been updated to version 1.1.2. This update includes various bug fixes.

The “Exclude search results not in my own language” preference has been removed. An unexpected change by Twitter broke this feature which caused searches to return 0 tweets.

The “No internet connection” warning has been silenced. Many users place their device in airplane mode at night and it would be annoying having the app run in the background with this alert every 15 minutes.

The “Twitter failed” message now ignores HTTP 403 errors, which were causing the message to appear more than usual.

Fixed some memory “leaks” (not really leaks but poorly optimized code and a few dangling event listeners)

Some code cleanup and reorganization that won’t affect normal users

The update should be available shortly.

Sorry about the super fast update releases, folks. Yesterday’s phnx 1.1 update brought lots of nice features and fixes but unfortunately a couple of silly bugs slipped through. I just submitted this update to HP and it should be available shortly. My apologies for any inconveniences this may have caused.

Bug fixes

Doing an edit retweet no longer carries HTML into the compose box

Auto-refresh after posting now works

Fixed some duplicating tweet situations

Addressed some notification issues

Thanks for everything and I’m going to get back to work on update 1.2!

Hey all thanks for all the great feedback in the first week of phnx, just submitted version 1.1 of phnx to HP for approval. It should be live sometime this week!

New Features and Fixes

URL shortening via bit.ly (the compose box will be redesigned soon so please excuse the current layout. Didn’t want to make people wait for a basic feature like URL shortening for so long) – NOTE: custom bit.ly is not supported yet but it will be very soon!

View followers and followings of a user

Added larger font options

Added confirmation to delete, block, report, and unfollow actions

Auto refresh (refresh when the card is maximized again) preference added

Preference for forward swipe action added

Ability to undo a retweet

Ability to choose the default account (when more than one account is added)

Hashtags now open in the search view

Open user profiles in a new card

Fixed notifications – now tapping on a mention scrolls to the mentions panel, etc

Fixed a zillion bugs!

Coming Soon

Gap detection for old tweets

Redesigned compose toaster

Just Type support

Much, much more

I haven’t finished the phnxapp.com website yet, but that isn’t stopping phnx from rising into the HP webOS App Catalog. I submitted the app to HP last night, it should be available within the week. Here are the details on pricing, features, and some screenshots.

Price: $2.99

Update: phnx is now open source and is available for free via GitHub or the HP App Catalog. Thank you everyone for your support!

Features

Beautiful and unique interface

Slide or tap to view panels on the home and profile scenes

Unique “Toaster” pop ups to compose and display tweets, conversations, and more without leaving the current view

Auto-expand many short URLs when the tweet is viewed

Break away searches, lists, and retweet timelines into new cards

Special icons that appear when a card is minimized to easily manage multiple accounts (can be disabled via preferences)

Show the amount of retweets a given tweet has

View who has retweeted a given tweet (by tapping on the RT count)

Two beautiful themes (Rebirth and Ash) with more on the way

It’s time for a break. I took a short break last fall while I got adjusted to the new gig and married life in general – and those were some good months. I need to give myself some time with family and to entertain other ideas I’ve had.

Also, I am not currently able to give my faithful users the commitment and support that you all deserve. To keep dangling carrots in front of you would be unfair.
